Today is the officially the first day of spring and many homeowners are clearing out clutter, catching up on yard work, and doing a deep clean on their home.  As you and your family take care of your home, its important to remember to add your heating and air system to your to-do list. Summer will be here before you know it!

1. Reduce utility bills:  According to the EPA, the average household spends more than $2,200 a year on energy bills, with nearly half of this going to heating and cooling costs. Dirt and neglect are the top causes of heating and cooling system inefficiency and failure(www.energystar.gov). Basically, just by keeping your coils and filters clean you can help cut the cost on your electric bill! You can clean your outdoor coil with just a simple garden hose. First remove any leaves or other debris with your hand and then give your outdoor unit a thorough spray down. Also be sure to keep your filters clean by replacing them every 30 days. It is best for an HVAC service technician to clean your indoor coil though. Indoor coils can be hard to get to with many fragile components. We recommend having them cleaned twice a year.

2. Reduce occurance of breakdowns:  Your HVAC system works hard during the summer to keep your family comfortable. Its important that everything on your cooling system is working properly before the heat hits and leaves your home feeling like a rain forest. By having a tune-up performed by a qualified heating and air contractor, you can be alerted to any possible problems before a breakdown occurs.

3. Keep your system running longer:  Just like anything in your home, the better you take care of something, the longer it lasts.  If you have ever had to replace your home’s heating and air system then you know how costly it can be so it is definitely worth it to spend a little money on preventative maintenance rather than making repairs or replacing the whole system.
