4 Benefits of Having Zoned Air Conditioning

We all have rooms in our homes that just don’t seem to be as comfortable as the others. Often times its the second floor or rooms that have a lot of windows. By having a zone system installed, you can eliminate this problem. Typically, with forced air systems there is only one thermostat to control the heating and cooling in the entire home. With a zoning system, you can set temperatures differently for individual rooms or sections of your home.

What is zoning?
A zoning system is a professionally installed control system consisting of a zone damper and thermostat for each room or zone of the home. This system is wired into a control panel (zone board) that sequences each thermostat’s call with the motorized dampers located in the ductwork that open and close based on the demands of the thermostats. Multiple thermostats control a single air conditioner or heat pump. This allows you to control the temperature for each area or “zone” of your home.  Each zone has its own separate thermostat to control the heating, cooling and fan operation for its individual zone.

4 Benefits of Zoned Air Conditioning

1. More Even Temperatures. Typically there are rooms in your home that are always warmer or cooler than the others. Upper floors can be warmer than lower floors because heat rises. Also, rooms that have a lot of windows can require more cooling than rooms that have less windows. Zoning helps to even out the temperature in your home by providing cooling to rooms that didn’t seem to ever cool down before.

2. Better Airflow. In a single-zone HVAC system, once the thermostat is set there is virtually no way to control the temperature in individual rooms except by manually closing off the vents in each room.  However, closing off too many registers can cause airflow problems and could shorten the life of your heating and cooling system. A zoned system allows for proper airflow throughout your home while still having customized temperature settings in different parts in your home.

3. Lower Energy Bills. If used properly, system zoning can help save you money on your energy bills by allowing you to only spend energy on the parts of your home that you use most. You can put areas of your home, like upstairs or guest rooms,  that are seldom used into a zone and only heat or cool the rooms when you need it.

4. Everyone can be comfortable. Without a zoning system, some bedrooms may be colder or warmer than the others. This may lead to arguments between family members on what temperature to set the thermostat. Heating and cooling system zoning allows all family members to be comfortable in their own zones.
