Tips to Maximize Savings with a Programmable Thermostat

focuspro_programmable_hires

Programmable thermostats allow you to run a scheduled heating and cooling program without having to remember to change your settings throughout the day. They can save you money on your utility bill by automatically adjusting the temperature when you are away from your home. But it takes more than just owning a programmable thermostat to save money. You have to know how to use it! Here are some tips that can help maximize your savings.

1.  Choose a thermostat that fits your schedule. Different programmable thermostats have different customization options. A 7-day model allows you to have a different setting for everyday of the week. A 5-2 model allows you to have one setting for during the week and another setting for the weekend. There is also a 5-1-1 model that allows for one setting during the week and separate settings for Saturday and Sunday. Be sure to pick one that works best with your family’s schedule.

2. Timing is important. Many people don’t realize that your HVAC system isn’t just changing the temperature of the air in home, but also your insulation. It can take hours for your unit to penetrate the walls of your home. One of the best times to set your thermostat back is during the weekday when your family is at work or school. Another great time is at night, when most people prefer to sleep in cooler temperatures. Only consider adjusting the temperature if you will be away (or asleep) for four hours or more.

3. Don’t use extreme temperature differences. Setting back your thermostat  can save you money but it is possible to overdo it. We recommend adjusting your thermostat by 5 to 8 degrees warmer or cooler. If the temperature difference is too great, it could end up costing you more money by causing your system to work even harder.

4. Plan ahead. Take into consideration your daily schedule. You may want to adjust the settings to cool down a couple of hours before you get home from work. This is a great way to save money without sacrificing your comfort. If you are going out of town for an extended period of time, you can use the hold button to continue at energy saving temperatures while your on vacation.

What temperature should you set your thermostat?

We hear this question a lot but there isn’t one magical setting. You should set your thermostat to the temperature that is the most comfortable to you. During the summer most people are comfortable between 70 and 75 degrees and 65 to 72 degrees in winter. For every degree you raise (during summer) or lower (during winter) your thermostat setting, you can lower your energy bill by 1%.
