We tend to think of poor air quality as something outside, however; there is up to 10 times more pollution indoors than outdoors. Poor indoor air quality in your home can cause a wide range of health concerns for your family; including allergies, the common cold, and even lung diseases like cancer. Removing the sources of indoor pollutants along with proper ventilation is key to promote healthy indoor air.

1. Replace air filters regularly. Filters help to remove irritants and dust from the air. We recommend replacing your filter once a month. Make sure the filter is properly sized with no gaps. Clean filters also allow your system to operate more efficiently, saving you money.

2. House plants. NASA performed a clean air study and found that many types of common houseplants can help eliminate harmful chemicals in the air (Article). Chemical eliminating plants include aloe vera, peace lily, and spider plant. For more air cleaning plants, Mother Nature Network has a list of 15 household plants that help improve indoor air quality.

3. Air purifiers and cleaners. There are multiple products on the market that your HVAC contractor can install. Two of my favorite products are the GPS-2400 and AccuClean. The GPS-2400 plasma air purifier uses ionization to remove mold, viruses, and bacteria. It also convents volatile chemicals into friendly gases. American Standard has an AccuClean whole-home filtration system that removes 99.98% of allergens.

4. Clean your home regularly. Dust your home with a damp cloth once a week. Don’t forget about the top of the refrigerator, ceiling fans, and curtains. Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter and cleaners with non-toxic chemicals. Bedding should be washed once a week to reduce dust mites. Also, keep your pets bathed and groomed.

5. Circulate the  air. Proper ventilation is crucial to healthy indoor air. Turn on exhaust fans while cooking or showering. Use ceiling fans and keep interior doors open. Weather permitting, open windows to allow fresh air inside.

6. Have ductwork inspected. Many of us forget about ductwork since it is not easily seen. But your duct system is one of the most important systems in your home. Leaks in ductwork can draw in dust and pollen as well as decrease efficiency. Davis Heating & AC offers duct blast testing that can pinpoint problems and inefficiencies in your duct system.
